GOOD TO KNOW

Quick answers about CHEWZ-it®, materials, composting, and everyday use.

What’s the problem with traditional single-use plastic cutlery?

Every year, tens of billions of plastic forks, spoons, and knives are used and discarded in the U.S. alone (estimates range from 40 billion to over 100 million daily). Most end up in landfills, incinerators, or the environment, where they can persist for hundreds of years, breaking down into harmful microplastics that pollute oceans, soil, and wildlife.

How does the CHEWZ-it Tutensil help?

Our Eco Duo hybrid TUtensil is BPI-certified compostable. It’s made from renewable, plant-based materials and designed to break down responsibly in industrial composting facilities, turning waste into nutrient-rich soil instead of pollution. One utensil does the job of two, reducing total material use.

What does “BPI Certified Compostable” actually mean?

BPI certification is based on ASTM D6400 standards, meaning the product has been independently tested and will break down in a commercial composting facility into water, CO₂, and organic matter, ypically within 90–180 days, without leaving toxic residues or microplastics.

Is compostable cutlery really better for the planet than plastic?

Yes, when properly composted. Plant-based compostable cutlery generally has a lower carbon footprint (often 40–70% lower emissions than conventional plastic) because it’s made from renewable resources like corn starch and PLA instead of petroleum. It also avoids long-term microplastic pollution.

Will my CHEWZ-it® Tutensil break down in my home compost or backyard?

Most compostable cutlery, including ours, is designed for industrial composting (high heat + microbes). It breaks down much more slowly in home compost or natural environments. We recommend checking with your local waste hauler or composting program.

Does it contain any plastic or leave microplastics behind?

No petroleum-based plastics. When composted correctly, it leaves zero microplastics, unlike traditional plastic cutlery, which fragments into persistent pollution.

How does the hybrid design make a difference?

By designing a fork and spoon into one TUtensil, we have reduced the total number of items needed per meal. This means less material produced, less packaging, and less waste overall!. Smarter sustainability by design.

Is it durable enough for real use?

Yes. Our CHEWZ-it® Tutensilis engineered for everyday performance with hot or cold foods in cafés, events, takeout, and food service — without sacrificing strength or convenience.

What else is CHEWZ-it® doing for sustainability?

We’re committed to continuous improvement: responsibly sourced materials, supporting composting infrastructure, and exploring even lower-impact options and HOME composite options. Because it is a 2-in 1, every CHEWZ-it® you choose helps shift demand away from fossil-based plastic.
